The Hobonichi Techo Weeks 2026 Yuichi Inoue: Amenimo Makezu pays tribute to the renowned calligrapher Yuichi Inoue, known for breaking free from the boundaries of traditional calligraphy to create bold, powerful, and expressive works. His dynamic strokes and raw energy left a lasting mark on contemporary Japanese art.
This special edition features his rendition of Amenimo Makezu (“Be Not Defeated by the Rain”), a celebrated poem by Kenji Miyazawa. Inoue created the piece using conté crayon, writing with intensity even after the crayon broke—scratching and layering corrections in a burst of visceral creativity.
The canvas-like hardcover, rough and textured to the touch, conveys that raw emotional force. The off-white surface highlights the opening and closing lines of the poem, while the spine glows with a vivid shade of orange, adding energy to the design.
The print faithfully reproduces the original ink variations, smudges, and texture of the strokes. The year 2026 and the English credit for the artwork are stamped in matte silver foil, complementing the clean, minimal finish.
As an exclusive bonus, this Weeks comes with a Hobonichi Pencil Board featuring the full poem. The front displays the calligraphy in navy blue on a green background, evoking rain and wind, while the reverse shows the phrase “Be not defeated by the rain, Nor let the wind prove your better.”
