MATTHEW CHEN X STILO&STILE

Matthew Chen spent a few years in Japan while studying and received guidance from Nagahara of Sailor for the Sailor's specialty nib grinds. During his college student abroad in Japan, met with various “nib doctors” to confirm the efficacy of his nib grinding techniques; among these include Yoshimune-san of Pen and Message and Tsuchida-san of Pilot. Mr. Nagahara Jr. provided him with extensive guidance during the education on grinding the Naginata Togi nib.

Since his return to the United States, Matthew Chen has built a custom machine for nib grinding with the support and guidance of Michael Masuyama. He use the same exact tool setting as Michael Masuyama (which came straight from Sailor factory in Japan where Mr. Masuyama worked for 23 years). The grinding wheel is one of the key elements of the nib grinding and its quality, and Matthew's tools are of pen factory quality.

MINI KODACHI

The Mini Kodachi nib was created to make the renowned Kodachi by Matthew Chen more accessible and practical. Preserving the same design philosophy, the Mini Kodachi reproduces the line variation typical of nibs inspired by Japanese and Chinese calligraphy brushes, but in a more compact version, ideal for everyday use.

The writing character remains faithful to the original: thin vertical strokes and broader horizontal strokes, with an effect reminiscent of brushwork. In Western writing, the Mini Kodachi behaves like a forgiving architect nib, offering natural line variation depending on the writing angle.

This smaller version retains the character and expressiveness of the Kodachi, but with the convenience of a format better suited to the needs of daily writing.

KODACHI

Before the war, Japan's fountain pens were commonly equipped with a grind made to emulate brush strokes with thin vertical lines, thick horizontal lines, and a sharp hairline at high angles. Revived by Nobuyoshi Nagahara and passed on to his son Yukio Nagahara, the Naginata Togi grind has found fame as a bespoke option from Sailor. Yukio Nagahara offers a similar grind that he has named the Kodachi. Yukio Nagahara has granted Matthew permission to offer the same grinds as he does.

Kodachi nib is designed to recreate brush strokes for Japanese and Chinese calligraphy when used a certain way. For western writing it will act like a very forgiving architect that has line variation depending on the writing angle.

URANAGI

Uranagi grind is a Kodachi flipped upside down. The regular writing side will write like an Ultra Extra Fine and the reverse will write like a mini Kodachi.

BEAK POINT

Beak Point is a Nagahara specialty grind. This nib is similar to the Fude but the nib is bent the other way. This makes the nib able to put down normal lines when writing regularly but offers thick Fude Point strokes on the reverse side. This specialty nib allows for wide line variation depending on the side you use to write with.

CURSIVE ITALIC

Cursive Italic has a thick vertical line and a thin horizontal line to give your writing a flair. Compared with the standard Stub, Cursive Italic by Matthew Chen features a horizontal line as thin as possible without digging into the paper.

JAPANESE FINE

Japanese Fine by Matthew Chen offers a pleasant writing experience, as you were writing with the famous Japanese nibs. Flow and smoothness of this nib has been optimized by Matthew Chen to deliver the best writing experience possible.
