Friday 12 and Saturday 13 June 2026 you will have the exclusive opportunity to entrust your nib to Matthew Chen, one of the most respected nibmeisters on the international scene, for a bespoke customisation. The service is available both for those attending the event at our Rome store and for online customers.
How it works
Online customers
- Purchase this service by selecting the type of grind you would like.
- Pair it with a fountain pen from our catalogue. If you would like to customise more than one pen, add one service per pen to your cart.
- After your order is placed, we will contact you by email to discuss all the details. If the nib is not compatible with the requested grind, we will replace it before proceeding.
Shipping on 20 June in a single parcel together with any other items in your order.
In-store customers
- Purchase the service and select "in-store pickup" as your shipping method.
- You can bring your own fountain pen or purchase a new one from our fountain pen section.
- We will contact you to schedule an appointment within the event time slots. The work is carried out directly in store, in front of you.

Tuning / Smoothing
€45Flow adjustment and tip smoothing for a more fluid and comfortable writing experience, without altering the nib's original shape. Ideal for those who want to improve their nib's performance without changing its character.
Standard Grind
€75Classic grinds to add character to your everyday writing. Choose from:
- Western Fine — tip reduction for a finer, more precise line.
- Stub — broad vertical strokes and narrower horizontals, with good flow.
- Cursive Italic — greater contrast between thick and thin strokes, ideal for fluid cursive writing.
- Sharp Italic — maximum line variation for crisp, defined strokes typical of formal calligraphy.
- Oblique — any of the above with a custom angle tailored to your grip.
Specialty Grind
€85Advanced grinds for those seeking extreme precision or a highly distinctive line. Choose from:
- Japanese Fine — finer than a Western Fine, writes smoothly without scratching.
- Japanese Extra Fine — even finer, ideal for those with small handwriting.
- Ultra Extra Fine — the finest tip available, for absolute writing precision.
- Architect — narrow vertical strokes and broad horizontals, the opposite effect of a Stub.
Nagahara Specialty Grind
€109The exclusive grinds developed by Master Nagahara for Sailor, performed by Matthew with his personal authorisation. Choose from:
- Kodachi — reproduces a brush-like effect for Japanese and Chinese calligraphy; in Western script, it creates line variation based on writing angle.
- Uranagi — the reverse of the Kodachi, for a mirrored effect.
- Fude Point — uses part of the nib body as the writing surface. May be limited by the internal space of the pen cap.
- Beak Point — the reverse of the Fude Point, recommended when the Fude is incompatible with the pen.
