Two of the most sophisticated Maki-e techniques are employed: Togidashi-Maki-e, which creates a smooth and glossy surface through multiple layers of lacquer polished by hand, and Taka-Maki-e, which gives the artwork a raised texture using thick lacquer and precious metal powders. The combination, known as Togidashi-Taka-Maki-e, adds depth, brilliance, and a unique tactile sensation.

The subject is the goldfish (金魚), a centuries-old symbol of wealth, good fortune, and elegance in Japanese culture.
