The Wancher Densho Tsugaru 4 Facets Kuro-age Raden is an exceptional fountain pen crafted using the highly intricate Tsugaru-nuri technique—one of Japan’s most demanding and visually striking Urushi lacquering methods. Originating from Aomori Prefecture, this method involves layering 4 to 6 uneven coats of colored Urushi, which are then polished by hand after several months of curing.
The “Kuro-age” pattern features a dominant glossy black surface, enhanced by speckled undertones and a mother-of-pearl (Raden) inlay that adds a natural iridescence. The four-faceted body reflects the pen’s connection to Kinma-nuri art, which emphasizes decoration on flat surfaces.
Each pen is fully handcrafted over the course of more than six months, making it a true work of Japanese lacquer artistry. The faceted “Densho” shape embodies Wancher’s homage to tradition and innovation in Urushi techniques.
Equipped with a JoWo #6 steel nib, this fountain pen comes in a wooden box with converter and standard cartridges. A masterpiece to be admired, written with, and treasured.
