Wancher Dream Pen Echizen Urushi Sakura Zukiyo is a fountain pen inspired by one of Japan's most poetic scenes: cherry blossom petals drifting through a moonlit spring night. This fleeting moment reflects the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, the appreciation of beauty found in impermanence, simplicity and the passage of time.
In Japan, sakura blossoms have long symbolised the arrival of spring and the fragile beauty of life itself. Illuminated by the moon and carried by the evening breeze, the falling petals create a peaceful and contemplative landscape that this writing instrument faithfully captures through the art of traditional Japanese lacquer.
The barrel is finished with a deep black Echizen Urushi lacquer, one of Japan's most celebrated lacquering traditions. Its lustrous surface provides the perfect backdrop for the elegant cherry blossoms, whose delicate colours seem to glow against the dark lacquer.
Echizen Urushi originates from the Echizen region of Fukui Prefecture, one of Japan's oldest lacquer-producing areas. The lacquer is obtained from the sap of the native urushi tree, a material that has been used for more than 9,000 years to create objects of exceptional beauty and durability.
Each pen is crafted through a meticulous process in which the lacquer is applied in multiple thin layers, allowing each one to cure completely before the next is added. This time-honoured technique can take several months to complete, resulting in remarkable depth, gloss and longevity.
The decoration is created using the Kindai Maki-e technique, a contemporary evolution of the traditional Maki-e art. This method allows for richer colours and greater visual depth, beautifully highlighting the cherry blossoms as they float across the lacquered surface.
