The Sailor 115th Anniversary Commemorative Fountain Pen Yosegi Zaiku is an extraordinary commemorative fountain pen created to celebrate Sailor Pen’s 115th anniversary through a project deeply connected to Hiroshima’s craftsmanship, materials, and cultural heritage.
This special edition was developed together with local artisans, traditional manufacturers, and historical partners from Hiroshima, transforming the fountain pen into a true expression of Japanese artistry and tradition. Every detail, from the wooden body to the paper materials used for the packaging, was carefully selected to reflect the spirit and identity of Hiroshima.
The pen body is crafted using Yosegi Zaiku, a refined Japanese wood parquetry technique that combines different natural woods into intricate geometric patterns. For this edition, Sailor selected three tree species native to Hiroshima’s forests: Momiji maple, symbolizing harmony, Ginkgo, representing timelessness, and Abemaki sawtooth oak, symbolizing strength.
The natural warmth of the wood combined with the precise geometry of the Yosegi Zaiku craftsmanship gives the pen a sophisticated contemporary appearance while preserving the authenticity of traditional Japanese woodworking. The oil finish enhances the depth, texture, and beauty of the wood grain, making every fountain pen unique.
The fountain pen is fitted with Sailor’s renowned 21K gold nib, engraved with a dedicated 115th Anniversary marking. The special composition of 21K gold, more flexible than standard 14K or 18K nibs, allows for exceptionally stable ink flow and a remarkably smooth writing experience. Even under stronger writing pressure, the nib maintains excellent control and consistency, offering the refined sensation Sailor describes as a “feather’s touch.”
The cap ring features the exclusive engraving “SAILOR 115th ANNIVERSARY HIROSHIMA Est.”, while the individual serial number is laser engraved on the barrel end, emphasizing the exclusivity of this highly limited production.
The packaging itself is an essential part of the anniversary project. The outer sleeve is crafted from recycled Orizuru paper, produced using origami cranes donated to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park as symbols of peace and hope. Each crane is carefully unfolded by hand, sorted by color, and transformed into handmade recycled paper.
Inside the box is an elegant Bingo-gasuri fabric pen pouch, created using one of Japan’s most important traditional textile techniques. This historic indigo-dyed fabric from Hiroshima is appreciated for its durability, softness, and cultural significance preserved by generations of artisans.
The included leaflets are crafted using traditional Otake Tesuki Washi paper. For the Yosegi Zaiku edition, Sailor selected a special paper containing Kouzo mulberry fibers, historically used in traditional Japanese architecture.
Limited to only 115 numbered pieces worldwide, the Sailor 115th Anniversary Commemorative Fountain Pen Yosegi Zaiku is a tribute to writing, Japanese craftsmanship, and Sailor’s 115 years of history, transforming every detail into a celebration of artistry and heritage.
