The Wancher Sekai Aizu Urushi Ebony is a handcrafted fountain pen that blends rare natural materials with one of Japan’s oldest lacquer traditions. It belongs to the Sekai collection, inspired by the symbolic “World Tree,” representing harmony and connection through art.

The body is made from ebony, a prized wood renowned for its density, deep color and durability. This is then finished using the ancient Aizu Urushi technique, originating from the snowy Aizu region and boasting more than 9,000 years of history. Aizu Urushi is considered one of the highest expressions of Japanese lacquer craftsmanship.

Each pen is meticulously hand-painted with Suki Urushi, a translucent lacquer that reveals the natural grain of the ebony. Over time, the lacquer becomes clearer and glossier, unveiling the wood’s texture layer by layer. After multiple coats and a long curing period—six months, a year or even more—the surface achieves a luminous, refined transparency.

The Sekai Aizu Urushi Ebony embraces the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-sabi (侘寂), the appreciation of imperfect, natural beauty. Slight irregularities or subtle imperfections are intentional, reflecting both the living nature of the wood and the artisan’s patient hand. Each pen is therefore one of a kind, with its own unique presence.

Equipped with a steel nib and fully handcrafted, the Wancher Sekai Aizu Urushi Ebony is a writing instrument where history, nature and artistry converge. A pen designed to grow more beautiful with time.
