The Wancher Sekai Aizu Urushi Verawood is a handcrafted fountain pen that blends natural precious wood with the ancient tradition of Japanese lacquer art. It belongs to the Sekai collection, inspired by the symbolic “World Tree,” a representation of harmony and connection across cultures.
The pen body is made from Verawood, selected alongside other fine woods sourced from around the world. Each piece is then finished using the Aizu Urushi technique, one of Japan’s oldest and most celebrated lacquer traditions. Originating in the snowy Aizu region and with over 9,000 years of history, Aizu Urushi is renowned for its depth, durability and refined artistry.
Every Sekai Aizu Urushi pen is meticulously hand-painted with Suki Urushi, a translucent lacquer that gradually reveals the natural beauty of the wood beneath. Over time, the Urushi becomes clearer and glossier, enhancing the grain of the Verawood. After multiple layers and a long curing period—six months, a year or longer—the pen develops a luminous finish and a uniquely rich texture.
This fountain pen embraces the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-sabi (侘寂), the appreciation of natural imperfection and simplicity. Slight surface irregularities or subtle variations are intentional, honoring the organic character of both wood and lacquer. Each pen is therefore one of a kind.
Equipped with a steel nib and entirely handcrafted, the Sekai Aizu Urushi Verawood is a writing instrument that grows more beautiful with time, reflecting both nature’s depth and the craftsman’s skill.
