The Wancher Sekai Byakudan-nuri is a handcrafted fountain pen that brings together two of Japan’s most sophisticated decorative techniques: Byakudan-nuri and the art of Kintsugi. It is part of the Sekai collection, which celebrates writing as a universal artistic language.

Byakudan-nuri (白檀), named after the amber glow of sandalwood, is a highly intricate lacquer technique. The process involves applying a base coat, painting an Urushi layer that is quickly and expertly polished, pressing thin gold or silver foil onto the surface, and finishing with layers of Suki Urushi (transparent lacquer) and candy-colored Urushi. The final result is a deep, glossy, luminous finish that requires exceptional craftsmanship.

To make the Urushi visually stand out, each layer is applied in a spiral pattern. This creates the impression that the Byakudan-nuri floats above the surface, with seamless transitions in the brush lines along the entire pen body.

Complementing this work is the traditional art of Kintsugi (金継ぎ), which uses Urushi and precious metal powders to highlight “scars” and imperfections. On this pen, the Kintsugi line appears where the Byakudan coating ends, acting as a subtle yet essential connector between cap, grip and barrel, even though they are distinct parts. A small detail that embodies an important Japanese aesthetic ideal.

The pen is fitted with a steel nib and is entirely finished by hand. Each piece is unique, showcasing a level of artistry rarely seen on modern writing instruments.

A remarkable creation that blends tradition, beauty and craftsmanship, ideal for anyone seeking a fountain pen with a truly artistic soul.
